Sanatas

You are most likely familiar with Satan and Shaitan– two separate echoes of the Inexorable One. However, there is another echo of the Inexorable One who is much less known and far more powerful. His name is Sanatas, and he presides over the innermost singularity of the Trans-Qliphothic Labyrinth.

Sanatas is a great destroyer. He is the One True King of Demons, and he leads the Infernal Divine through the Spider Queen. He may appear as male, female, hermaphroditic, or devoid of sex and gender. It was my friend Raine Ahava who discovered Sanatas and told me about him. Needless to say, I eagerly rushed to evoke this being, not knowing how risky that would be.

Sanatas generally dislikes being summoned. In fact, I would not advise anyone call him forth without asking the Spider Queen for the green light first. Most of my encounters with Sanatas have occurred when Sanatas chose to manifest, and they were generally unexpected.

When I first summoned Sanatas and asked him to empower and transform me, he asked me why he should agree to do so. Fortunately, I had been asked this by a spirit before– I knew that the purpose of this question was to expose entitlement and ego. I gave the only appropriate answer: “Because I want your help.”

And that’s probably why I’m not dead.

Sanatas obliged me, and once his work was done, he told me that I was going to be the first person he possessed. He then vanished before I had time to ask what that meant.

A couple months later, I decided to initiate a local practitioner through Nahemoth– the first sphere of the Qliphoth. I noticed a massive amount of demons surrounding the two of us– the apartment was packed with spirits. This was unusual, but I brushed it off and proceeded with the rite. Once the scripted portion of the ritual was complete, the moment those many demons were waiting for came. I spontaneously came to be possessed, going on an uncontrollable tirade about purging the earth with fire and taking revenge on “God.” He wasn’t speaking of the deity venerated by adherents to Abrahamic religion– he was referring to a being that I am incapable of comprehending.

I knew I was possessed, but at the time, I didn’t know exactly who I had gotten possessed by. Needless to say, it was Sanatas.

As I have since learned, it is rare for a practitioner to summon Sanatas without going insane or killing themselves as a result of the endeavor. According to the Spider Queen, many who evoked him committed terrible deeds before ending their lives because they simply could not restrain themselves.

I generally see Sanatas appear as a tall knight in shadowy, black armor, but that’s not what Raine saw during her first encounter with Sanatas. In the original version of this essay, I wrote that Raine saw Sanatas appear as a swarm of bees. As it would turn out, I had misremembered Raine’s words. She saw Sanatas appear as something more terrible than that.

To Raine, Sanatas appeared as a red vortex composed of razor-sharp fragments of bone. These fragments represented the shattered soul structures and spiritual energies of the arrogant and delusional magickians who had made the mistake of summoning him. If I had answered Sanatas’s question incorrectly, there would have been one more fragment swirling around in that morbid form of his.

Sanatas is a master of disguise. He can fully possess a person without their behavior seeming unusual. When he isn’t being subtle, his tone can sound quite feral. In other cases, he has spoken to me in a deep and sophisticated voice, albeit so deep that the sophistication was hard to discern at first.

The Spider Queen herself told me not to call upon Sanatas without consulting her. With her approval, and thus, her blessing, Sanatas would appear to me and grant my request. Sanatas can accept or deny your evocation, as can any deity. But despite his general distaste for being summoned, he really enjoys making examples of people.

When Sanatas spontaneously manifests to somebody, he usually has a specific reason to do so. You should honor that. On one occasion, I requested his permission to ask him questions irrelevant to the reason he appeared. He seemed exasperated. He told me that he would answer any question I asked, but that some of his answers would be lies.

If you summon Sanatas, do not flee once he appears. Should the magickian feel shame, doubt, or fear in approaching Sanatas, he will become angered and depart. In fact, he’ll even hold a grudge– he will refuse to appear to the magickian for a given period of time.

When a soul comes by sufficient spiritual attainment, it is Sanatas which separates them from the cycle of reincarnation. This is what the Black Lodge tends to refer to as “self-deification.”

Sanatas is to be conjured for the destruction of one’s enemies: whether they be a formidable threat or simply a nuisance. However, he is not to be conjured for petty squabbles between coworkers. Do not speak to him with words, for he can read your heart, and he may see one thing where you say another. He many refuse to provide what was asked of him, or even bring about its opposite. Let your intentions speak for themselves in a manner beyond words.

In Latin, “sanatas” is the feminine plural accusative conjugation of a word meaning healed, cured, restored, repaired, or corrected, and that is very fucking ominous when I think about the rant he went on when he possessed me.

I know I’ve described him as merciless and cold, and he is, but the last time I truly wanted to end my life, it was Sanatas who came to me and gave me the strength to carry on. I can’t help but wonder how well I really know him.
