“The basilisk is related to the all-powerful Gnostic god Abraxas, ruler of magic and spiritual powers in the universe, who is portrayed in art as having the head of a cock or lion and the body of a man with legs that end in serpents or scorpions.” -Carl Jung
Abraxas originated as an Egyptian deity and the Gnostic conception of the Supreme Being and Supersoul (the Absolute), but he later came to be incorporated into Demonology for obvious reasons. Generally speaking, Satanists refer to the Supersoul as Baphomet, the Goat of Mendes who is also known as Octinomos.
I had been planning to summon Abrasax for a while, but I was hesitant to work with another entity whose worshipers refer to him as the Supersoul– after all, Odin, Krishna, and Jehovah are misidentified with the Supersoul, and magickians calling upon those unscrupulous deities with the intent to contact the Supersoul do not wind up contacting the Supersoul at all. I would know– a Niner once called upon Krishna to curse an apprentice and I, and this Niner held Krishna to be the Supreme Being. My apprentice and I went to the graveyard and called upon Chavajoth to kick Krishna’s ass, and it worked, so there’s no way that the Niner successfully contacted the Supersoul with his Hare Krishna bullshit.
But what about Abrasax? I didn’t even know what I was getting into in summoning him. Could Abraxas be considered demonic? What if he isn’t the Supersoul? I’ve had undesirable experiences with all the deities I’ve worked with who were misidentified with the Supersoul, which makes sense in retrospect– does an intelligence who pretends to be the Supreme Being when he’s really just another deity sound like a trustworthy party to you?
So I got my personal gnosis of Abraxas’s magickal specialties from my guiding demons and found him to not only be phenomenally useful in alchemy but to be potentially one of the best allies that a practitioner of demon magick can have, despite the fact that Abraxas is not a demon. Later on, I asked Nyx whether or not Abraxas was the Supersoul, and she told me that he was. In fact, she specified that Abraxas is a direct projection of the Supersoul into an avatar– a semi-sentient and theomorphic intelligence which can be worshiped, summoned, etc. The Absolute’s self-projection in the form of the manifest divinity known as Abraxas is a temporary occurrence– it’s the Supreme Being’s act-of-manifesting in response to the endeavors of men to contact the Absolute.
I wasn’t going to share my personal gnosis that Abraxas is indeed the Supersoul (or at least, the entity which allows us to commune with it directly) with the public because I thought that I had no right to answer a question of such great importance to the magickian based on my own gnosis, even though I firmly trust my personal gnosis. I thought I should just list Abraxas’s specialties and tell the reader to find her own gnosis about whether or not Abraxas really was the true Supreme Being.
But then, I reread a book by Frater Kafyrfos, wherein he referred to the Supreme Being & Supersoul as “Abraxas/Baphomet,” which is precisely how I would have put it. And then, I found an article on WordPress about the Qliphoth by a Satanist identifying Abraxas with the true Supersoul. Best of all, during a video chat with an incredibly gifted seeress, I found my exact personal gnosis of Abraxas being articulated by one of the most gifted psychics I’ve ever met.
So, my personal gnosis regarding Abraxas is on flique. The next part of my gnosis will be a little more surprising: Abraxas is truly and secretly invested in the furtherance of the Black Lodge. He works to foster the mainstream’s tolerance for the Black Lodge and receptivity to its practices. Despite not being a demon or part of the Infernal Divine, Abraxas facilitates the manifestation of the Black Light within the Cosmos and pursues the furtherance of the phenomenon of the generation of the Black Flame/internal nexion. I will leave the witch to contemplate the astounding implications of this.
The teachings and auspices of Abrasax are apt for the use of ouija boards and the practice of necromancy. He teaches sex magick and rules ferility. He can help the witch establish genuine, sustained opulence. Abrasax rules the True Self (which is not the same as the Higher Self), the gnostic revelation and experience of the witch’s true physis,* and the Higher Self’s bestial or therianthropic/theriomorphic manifestation as the Spirit Animal.
*Physis is a term from Greek philosophy which refers to the inner nature (including character and spiritual essence) of a person as the ever-changing emanation of the Numinous that our inner nature is.
Abraxas is knowledgeable regarding stellar magick, the use of sensory deprivation in spiritual endeavors, and meditation. Abraxas can help the witch attain gnosis of and control over wyrd (destiny/fate) and glimpse the connections between us all. He can help the witch construct the variant of the Philosopher’s Stone which is attained by the practitioner of demon magick. This variant of the Philosopher’s Stone is known as Adamas Ater [the Black Diamond] and Lapis Exilis [the Stone of Isolation].
In pursuing this gnosis, I was also told that Abraxas could teach me about the O9A’s Star Game and the esotericism of the Tree of Wyrd. I was also told that he could teach me the truth behind the Occult esotericism of Nazi Germany. Now, the esotericism of the O9A is a matter of personal interest, and the truth behind Nazi Occultism is a matter that my ex-apprentice was seeking gnosis of because of the past life he had as a Nazi. I know exactly what to infer from this and it will never pass my lips. While my teachings are never disingenuous, the majority of my tradition is secret.
